Its a 3.0 CS but has an unknown BMW 3.5L engine in it (he thinks possibly out of an older 5 series or even maybe out of an old M1). Him and his dad restored it years ago, and man, that car is clean. Although I'm all about American muscle, I still loved the bimmer and thought it was a gorgeous car. The engine sounded awesome from the passenger seat as well.

M88 or S38, you're still talking 250-300HP. That car is absolutely beautiful, and probably extremely fast. Those two have to easily be my favorite M motors.

You and your engine pics! Next time he's around (which is fairly often) I'll get some engine pics.

Awesome! Later 3.5L motors are a relatively common swap and makes the car very usably as a daily, but the M88/S38 swap is uncommon. (They are mostly known although I don't discount the possibility of a few others lurking out there.) You'd know by opening the hood.

is it a twin cam mill in there? I did an s38 into my E3 3.0s many moons ago. Remember hooning across Kansas on a road trip from CO to CT at 3 digit speeds in it. Those old M30's in the E3 and E9 used to crack heads all the time, so not surprised this one has a new motor. Sweet car

Fun fact, up to two or three years ago, you could still buy M88/3's crate from BMW for about $15k.
